About Therapy With Me

Stop Riding Out This Storm by Yourself

Nobody plans for the storm. It rolls in, and before long you’re soaked to the skin, with no idea how long it’s going to last.

That’s when most people call me.

I grew up in the Midwest, where a thunderstorm takes over the whole sky, and I still love a good one. The part nobody loves is being out in it alone.

So think of me as the lifeguard on the beach. You do the swimming, and I watch the water with you, close enough to reach you when a wave knocks you sideways.

Leave With Skills for the Next Storm

First, we get your feet under you. In our early sessions, I listen closely, help you settle, and teach you practical ways to answer yourself when you beat yourself up.

Then we look underneath, because so much of the anxiety and low mood I see begins with a big change: a parent who needs more of you, a spouse who is sick or gone, kids who moved out, a body that won’t do what it used to.

We’ll figure out what that change is really stirring up, and we’ll look at it from a few new angles. And here’s what surprises people: the skills you build for this storm stay with you.

Life has storms and sunshine, and we’ll get you ready for both. That’s the gift of therapy: you get to keep it.

Take Your Time Trusting Me

Many of the people I see have been in therapy before, and some of them put their trust in the wrong person.

If that’s you, come in skeptical. I’d rather earn your trust over a few sessions than ask for it in the first one.

Be honest with me. If something I say doesn’t ring true, say so.

Try the small assignments I send you home with, because the real change happens in your week, not in the hour we spend together. And expect to laugh now and then, since hard things get lighter when you’re not the only one in the room.

Bring Your Faith, Your Doubts or Neither

I’m a progressive Christian, open and affirming, and your faith is welcome here, as much or as little as you want it in the conversation.

So are your doubts and your questions.

And if faith isn’t part of your life, nothing changes. Whoever you are and whoever you love, you’ll get the same care from me.

About Sue McCullough, LCSW

My life experiences guide my practice. Before I was a therapist, I was a client. I changed careers because I wanted to “pay it forward.”

Life is a gift. I hope we can find that gift together.

Today I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Colorado with more than 25 years in this work and a Master of Social Work from the University of Houston. Before social work, I studied geology and biology, so if you think like a scientist, you’re in good company.

When I am out of the office, I enjoy nature and spending time with my community.

Ready for Some Sunshine?

Storms pass, and what you learn in one is yours for the next.

If you’re done riding this one out alone, reach out, and we’ll take it from there.

Let’s Find the Sunshine

Find the Rainbow!

When you're caught in the storm, it feels like it will never end. I'd love to be standing next to you when the rainbow shows up.

I want to help you. Reach out, and let's work together toward a better life for you.
